NASA Astronaut currently living onboard the @iss
The Tribute in Light shines even into space. The crew of the @iss stands with you honoring those who were affected and those whose unbreakable spirit continues to shine the light. #TributeInLight #NeverForget #NYC
Trestles, #California. West Coast, south swell from the @iss Can almost see the railroad tracks from here. #SwellFromSpace
Oh what a feeling-- Sciencing on the ceiling. We have science everywhere on the @iss , including a microscope on the ceiling next to an incubator where scientists are growing protein crystals. Why protein crystals in space? Microgravity means they may be able to grow better, which could lead to better cancer-fighting medications on Earth.
Even astronauts need to chill. Spending this #LaborDay weekend reading and relaxing by my favorite window. After a long week packed with science, a spacewalk, and a re-docking, it’s important to recharge your batteries to keep focused on bringing your best.
Today marks the halfway point of my extended mission living and working on the @iss It also happens to be the 99th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave women the right to vote. Today I reflect on how the women who fought for that right inspire me to work hard every day to make the world a better place, in ways both big and small.
Watching in admiration of the agility and cooperation of international space programs to work through the dynamics of human spaceflight. This weekend, to enable the automated docking of an unpiloted Soyuz to the @iss after a hardware glitch, teams pulled together a solution to plan and flawlessly execute a manual undocking, fly-around, and re-docking of a Soyuz onboard. First time that operation has been done in four years and it was planned in a day!
Conducting research off the Earth, for the Earth! This #CubeLab looks at what is causing damage to the nervous system that’s common in Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis, and will reveal how living in space affects similar cells in healthy astronauts.
Weekend surf watch on #PuertoRico and the breaks around Rincón. From the @iss , remembering some great past sessions at Maria's. #SwellFromSpace
Night lights from the @iss Aurora glow over Antarctica, moonshine on the solar arrays, sunrise starting in the East, outside lighting on Dragon and Soyuz, and in the window, a random reflection of the little night light we keep on inside.
Good morning, #NYC! Looks like it was a great weekend to be in Central Park.
Had a blast cheering on the students from the SPHERES Zero Robotics Middle School Summer Program during their competition today! The SPHERES team tests algorithms developed by students and selects the best designs for the competition to operate the robots onboard @iss
August night skies! For my friends in the Southern Hemisphere this time, can you spot the Southern Cross? Happy star gazing and goodnight from the @iss !
Galveston Island, Texas. Dreaming of surf checks by bike from 61st Street to Flagship, long runs on East Beach, and Tanker Surfing the wakes of ships in the channel. #SwellFromSpace
Not an ordinary printer! The Bio-Fabrication Facility is one of many new & incredible experiments brought up on @spacex #Dragon. It’s a 3D printer of biological structures such as tissues, & microgravity opens up new possibilities for what it can create!
Moon chasing. So much going on from @iss this week with our nearest neighbor. Usually we see 16 moonsets and moonrises a day, but every so often our orbit happens to be right over the day/night line on Earth and the moon and the sun never appear to set. Add in a partial lunar eclipse and the 50th Anniversary of landing on the moon, and it’s a magical time to moon gaze. #Apollo #Apollo50th
The odds were in our favor on @iss today🌒 So special to experience a partial lunar eclipse during the historic week of #Apollo50th celebrations. Dreaming of the sights we’ll see on future #Artemis missions.
Part of a team of hundreds of thousands, the three people on this rocket knew the next time they set foot on Earth, the world will have been changed forever. Honored to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11 from the place that owes everything to them. #Apollo #Apollo11 #Apollo50
Still trying to sort out everything going on in that last star trails shot? Here is the same night scene, this one with the photos as a time-lapse instead of stacked. So much wonder.
Tropical Storm Barry
City lights, stars, lightning storms, even satellite flares--A composite of individual photos stacked on top of each other to show all the amazing things we see at night out our window.
Back to work and loaded with #MondayMotivaton! Working with cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin to replace a power strip for a Russian module. Our closets on the @iss can be just about anywhere!
Commemorating the #4thofJuly from the @iss as we pass over the city of #Philadelphia, where the words of the Declaration of Independence were adopted on this day. “…And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm Reliance on the Protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”
#ICYMI: Yesterday we watched from @iss as @nasa successfully tested the launch abort system of the #Orion spacecraft. In the unlikely event of an emergency, astronauts would be able to safely escape the vehicle and land back on Earth. Thank you to the Orion team for always keeping our safety in mind as we work towards taking our next giant leaps.
One of the most bold and recognizable geographical places on Earth: The stunning Baja California Peninsula in Northwestern #Mexico.
South #Jersey shore for the holiday week, anyone? Looks like a great beach day from the @iss !
Hello July skies and summer stargazing! Can you spot the Big Dipper from @iss ?
Friday night lights! Why do they dance? Charged particles from the sun get trapped in the Earth’s magnetic field and then funneled to the magnetic field poles. When a storm of these ions causes the magnetic field to have a sudden collapse and reconnection, the skies erupt in an incredible show like this. The light color comes from the ions colliding with the atmosphere much like what happens in tubes in a neon sign. The green comes from Oxygen. From the @iss , we have box seats for the game.
Atlantic swell hitting the Brazillian coast for the latest @wsl championship tour stop just north of Rio de Janeiro. Barrels and airs for days. #SwellFromSpace
Under parachute! Glued on the video of our crewmates as they returned safely to the planet.
