RAISISM Racism isn’t about race, it’s about how you are raised. Hate is a learned behavior, a family value. Teaching to embrace is a lot less effortful than teaching to hate. I was raised by two middle class, blue collar, white, Jewish, high school graduates. Their level of intelligence however was that which I hoped, and believed, the world would ultimately, not only catch up to but actually exceed; sadly, it has yet to happen in my lifetime. When I was about nine or ten years old, my brother, who is four years younger, and I were coloring on the floor with the crayola box of 64 crayons with the sharpener on the side. My parents came into the room, sat on the floor and asked both me and my brother to pick out our favorite color crayon. I picked a green and believe my brother chose yellow, or orange, I can’t really remember. Once we picked our favorite color, they picked up the box with the sharpener on the side and the remaining 62 colors and left the room...my brother and I just sat there not really knowing what to do or what just happened. Did we do something wrong, were we being punished, why were we in trouble?! They then walked back into the room only to inquire why we stopped coloring. Wasn’t it obvious, I thought...you took all the crayons! They continued to ask, why we weren’t coloring...well, I answered, because you took all the crayons. Yes, but we left you with your favorite, the one you like the most. Yes, but we still need all the other colors. Why? My parents asked...because, we answered, the other colors are needed to finish our picture. Why? My parents asked...because, we answered, the other colors make the picture pretty and one color isn’t enough to do so. They smiled at one another and then brought the green and yellow crayola box back into the room, spilled the remaining 62 colored crayons on the floor and explained to us how we should think of people like we do crayons. We may have our favorites but our life's like our pictures are made beautiful by all the different colors. If you want a beautiful life, seek out those that are different from you. Learn about those differences...embrace them. Travel different places, learn differen
