Lashing Out: The boldest beauty trend is right before your eyes. “Super-exaggerated, fucked-up lashes that are intense but somehow delicate.” Inspired by epic beauty moments like Lady Gaga’s five-inch gold-foil flutter peepers at this year’s Met Gala (the performer’s new beauty line, or the ethereal feather fringes at Valentino’s spring 2019 couture show, makeup artist @hannah_murray1 explains, “your lashes should remain beneath the brow, and the lower ones should be slightly shorter to balance the eye.” - Photography: @amytroostphotography Styling: @maxortegag Hair: @tinadidit Makeup: @hannah_murray1 Model: @naomichinwing Story: @sandraballentine W magazine, Vol. V 2019
What a circus! This season, fashion truly is the greatest show on earth. Showstopping costumes and over-the-top performances providing a wealth of kooky and colorful ideas, from Elsa @Schiaparelli , who presented jackets with embroidered plumed horses in 1938; to @jgalliano , who brought out the big top for his spring 1997 show. More recently, @mariagraziachiuri enlisted @mimbreacrobats , a troupe of female acrobats, for @Dior ’s dazzling spring 2019 couture show. For fall, @pacorabanne , @Gucci , @MarcJacobs , @LouisVuitton , and @Fendi , among others, offered playful riffs on ruff collars, oversize bow ties, harlequin prints, and ringmaster suiting. The results were weird, yes, but also whimsical and wonderful. We’d be remiss if we didn’t invite you to step right up. Each Fashion Week, model @anokyai has her hair braided into cornrows. It is not so much a beauty statement as a social one—an appeal to the fashion industry for more cultural awareness. “A lot of people are not well versed about how to do black hair. When I started out, I had so much breakage and heat damage, I lost 10 inches off the length.” - Born in Egypt to Sudanese refugees, Yai grew up in New Hampshire, where her parents worked long hours to make ends meet. Their work ethic instilled in her a desire to effect change; and just two years into her career, she appears to be doing just that. During her debut season, she became the first black model since Naomi Campbell to open a show for Prada, a house previously called out for its lack of diversity on the runway. - “Everyone should see themselves represented in fashion,” she says. In her free time, Yai fields DMs from young women eager for advice. “I tell them, ‘When you walk into a room, demand respect and attention.’” - Photography: @MertAlas + @MacPiggott Styling: @kjeldgaard1 Hair: @paulhanlonhair Makeup: @lucia_pieroni Story: @KarinNelson23 W magazine, Vol. V 2019
Signaling the growing influence that models are exerting on culture, @anokyai , the Egyptian-born, American-raised daughter of Sudanese refugees, has been on the runways for just a couple of years, but she is already using her popularity to advocate for greater diversity in the fashion and beauty industries. "For me there’s no other way to do it than the vulnerable approach, completely laying your soul bare. I mean, you can’t be worried about looking pretty when you’re acting. Granted, if you’ve got a camera in your face, you’re going to be thinking about it at first. But the more I learned about how important it is to know your character so well, the less I thought about myself as part of the equation.” @lilyrose_depp discusses stepping into the spotlight, adulthood, and standing on her own at the link in bio. - Photography: Tim Walker Styling: @SaraMoonves Hair: @1malcolmedwards Makeup: @sambryantmakeup Set Design: @nicholasdesjardins Story: @mrchrisbagley W magazine, Vol. V 2019

Remembering Isabel Toledo, who passed away today at the age 59. Since she made her fashion debut in 1985, Toledo had been characterized as a problem solver, more engineer–or magician–than designer. Along with her partner in romantic and professional crime, husband the artist Ruben Toledo, Isabel operated just outside the fashion system for decades, creating pieces on her own schedule for loyal couture clients among them, Michelle Obama, who wore a custom dress and overcoat to the Presidential inauguration in 2009. Learn more about the life and legacy of the enigmatic designer and those who love her in today’s story. - Photography: @BielParklee Wmagazine.com
